Nurse Competence in Aging Conference Shows Success of Geriatric Education Within Nursing Specialties
The second meeting of specialty nursing associations participating in the Nurse Competence in Aging (NCA) project represented a doubling of the initiative’s size and a deep commitment to promoting geriatric education among each organization’s members. Thirty-six of the NCA’s participating organizations gathered October 26-27, 2006, in Washington, D.C., to share the results of their combined 4 year efforts to make geriatric best practice a fundamental part of their member education. The NCA initiative includes 55 organizations, which represent more than 400,000 nurses nationwide.
Nursing specialties represented at the meeting ranged from oncology, to emergency, to psychiatric, to holistic nursing. This year’s meeting focused particularly on racial and ethnic issues in geriatric nursing care, rural health for older adults, disaster preparedness, and using the Web—including the NCA ConsultGeriRn.org website—to share geriatric information with their memberships.

The Nurse Competence in Aging project was initiated to help organizations move forward with activities to educate their members about unique needs of older adults and to develop geriatric-care projects related to the needs of the specialty practice area.
