Geriatric Activities

 

  • Launched geriatric section of NSNA Web site with access to educational and career resources for gerontological nursing and geriatric content in NSNA Publications
  • Presented a panel of specialists in geriatric nursing at the 2005 and 2006 NSNA Mid-Year Conference to address geriatric topics
  • Conducted workshops for students and faculty on a variety of topics including:
    • What is it like to be old?
    • Cross Cultural Communication and the Older Adult
    • Including Care of the Elderly throughout the Curriculum
    • The Greatest Generation—Caring for Yesterday’s Heroes
    • Update—Nurse Competence in Aging
  • Awarded scholarships to undergraduate nursing students interested in geriatric nursing

Education Modules, Programs and Learning Tools

 

  • Create a Mentorship program to identify and link nursing students interested in geriatrics to nurses practicing in the field.
  • Added a page on http://www.nsna.org with educational and career resources for gerontological nursing and care of older adults.

 

Awards

 

  • An award will be established to recognize a school or state chapter for conducting a community health service project that focuses on older adults.
  • Raise student awareness about careers in geriatric nursing and inspire innovation with a poster contest to be judged at the Annual Convention.
  • Fund two scholarship awards for students interested in geriatric nursing (one in 2006 and one in 2007).
