Geriatric Activities

 

  • Developed and broadly disseminated Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education (GENE) course to members
  • Available online for members and non-members at ENA’s Web site and as a face-to-face course at ENA's Annual Conferences
  • Developed safer handoff guidelines of older adults between long term care facilities and emergency departments.
  • Developed position statement, Care of Older Adults in the Emergency Setting

 

Publications and Position Statements

 

  • *Published ten articles in the Journal for Emergency Nursing (JEN) in 2002.
  • Published articles on geriatric emergency nursing in ENA Connection, the association's membership newsletter. The newsletter is distributed to 27,000 emergency department nurses nationally and internationally.
  • Published an article on the "Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education (GENE)" course in the July 2004 American Journal of Nursing.
  • *Dedicated content in the ENA Trauma Nursing Core Courses (TNCC) manual to geriatric trauma.
  • Completed a position statement on "Care of the Older Adult in the Emergency Care Setting."
  • Developed the "Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education (GENE)" course manual for distribution to program attendees.

Presentations, Workshops and Seminars

 

  • Presented the 8-hour "Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education (GENE)" program as a pre-conference offering for the 2004 ENA Scientific Assembly and at the 2005 Leadership Challenge conference.
  • Old age in new age: A comprehensive geriatric nursing education program was presented at the American Nurses Association Biennial Convention in Minneapolis, MN, in June 2004.

Special Interest Groups

 

  • * Developed and utilized the geriatric work group as an expert resource on geriatrics for both ENA and its members. The geriatric work group is responsible for developing the GENE content, the ENA position statement on best practices for the emergency care of the elderly, and identifying resources on geriatrics for emergency nurses.
